It is situated 23.5 km northwest of Harran, 3 km northeast of the Sanliurfa-Akçakale motorway. It lies between the Kötüçay Brook and the Kömürcü Stream in the Urfa Plain. It has a base diameter of 550 m and a height of 43 m. The northern and eastern skirts are occupied by the Sultan Village, after which the mound was named. Having a circular shape on the base, it is one of the largest mounds in the plain. It has been negatively affected by the erosion resulting from rainfalls. Thus, several cracks are observed on the mound in multiple directions. The slopes of the mound were leveled and transformed into a road by terracing towards the peak, and cleavages were opened in two directions for installation of the inlet and outlet pipes from and to the water tank on the hilltop. The erosion by rainfalls increased since the excavated trenches of the earlier years were left open. The periods identified are as follows: - Chalcolithic Age (straw tempered coarse ware) - EBA (fine ware, beige paste, polished ware on the outside and inside) - 2nd Millennium BC (sandy plain ware) - 1st Millennium BC (sandy fine ware) - Roman Period (red washed, impression decorated fine ware, coarse plain ware with grooved rim) - Merdieval Age-Islamic Period (coarse sand, glazed ware, body fragments) Sultantepe was excavated under the direction of S. Lloyd in 1952. The mound was investigated again by N. Yardimci et al. in 1989 and Iron Age material was collected [Yardimci 2004: 249-251]. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
