Depth:
+71;-8 m
Length:
1371 m
Region:
Marmara
Province:
Çanakkale
District:
Bayramiç
Village:
Evciler

Location: It is located on a 750 m high hill; south of the Evciler Village of Ezine. It can be reached by a half-an-hour walk from the village.
Structural Properties and formation : There is an inclining hall in the entrance; which houses rocky blocks fallen from the ceiling. A siphon diving was performed in the active gallery; which elongates as a side branch and joins the river. The water resurges from the first siphon at 50 m after the entrance. This siphon is 61 m long and 9 m deep; and it is followed by a 25 m long dry marble gallery with a stream of air. Bats; flies and snails were seen; but no outside connection was found. The second siphon could have been only passed by removing the rocks in water due to the narrow passages. There is a 80 m dry gallery between the 1st and 2nd siphons. The third siphon on the side branch ends up being occluded while the dry gallery becomes occluded by big rocky blocks at the end.
Research History: Discovered by BUMAK in 1996 upon notification of the people of Evciler village; it was explored by D. Wolozan in 2001 and published with its map in the ADEKS 2003 report.
Findings: In front of the first siphon; there is a graffiti consisting of many old and new dates; names; drawings of ships and other symbols from the 18th century on the left walls. Among them; most interesting are inscriptions of the Meyer Calvert family dated 1809 and 1846. Those inscriptions indicating that the members of said family; who was the British Consulate in Canakkale during that period; visited the cave; are like historical documents. A graffiti dated 1140 by Hijri Calendar (1720 by Gregorian Calendar) is another historical document. Also; there are several types of drawings of sailing ships and galleons.
