It lies to the west of Cape of Sile; 200 m east of the Sile Harbor. It is a sea cave; which was enlarged by the waves; and opened into the sandstone and marn deposits; i.e. sedimentary mixture of Sile including the Sile olistolites. The blocks from the collapsing roof turned into sand due to impact of the sea; and half of the cave was filled with sand. |
Location: |
Structural Properties and formation : It is a sea cave formed by sea waves in Sile olistrostrome consisting marl and sandstone [Baykal-Önalan 1979]. The easterly and especially northerly-sector winds; stream and waves played a major role in its geological formation. The block depressed have transformed into sand by destructive sea waves. Black Sea currents in the direction of east and west having caused a deposit in cave has closed half of the entrance. Sea activity in cave continues. The entrance of 100 m height continues decreasing towards the end. There are no stalactites and stalagmites. Hydrology: Cave in relation with sea is active and watery. |
Research History: It is known from the early ages. In terms of the emergence of Sile, cave is so interesting being one of the oldest settlement. Its defensive attribute is remarkable, since it is a convinient place to resist and has routes to escape both through sea and land. Known by people in Sile, cave was firstly mapped by the team of Baykal-Önalan. |
Findings: There are seagulls and spiders encountered. |
