Location: It is located on the southeastern slope of Harmancik Stream which is a branch of Dereiçi Stream that empties into Sakarya River; in the south of Karasu District 28 km north from Adapazari. The cave is situated on a plateau type surface which was cracked by the streams that pour into Sakarya River from the east direction.
Structural Properties and formation : It was developed inside the Akveren Formation or Devretkaya Limestones that cover the Çakraz Formation consisting of the old sandstone; pebble; and mudstone levels; and the Yilanli Formation that consists of dolomitic limestones and early crystallized limestones. The geological characteristics of the environment shows similarities with the Kizilcik Cave. Just north of the cave there is a large polije (Cehennemçukur). The sinkhole type; fossil Ğ half-active cave has an average width of 1-3 m; and 0.5-6 m of height. Its basin is filled with debris; sand; pebbles and piles of debris. It bears the shapes; and structures that characterize a multi-period development. On the other hand; it is poor in terms of dripstone formations except for the stalactites; and the curtain type dripstones that partially develop. The direction (NE-SW); and the dip (NW) of the limestones were especially decisive in the development of the cave which first extends in SW direction; then NW-west; and SE. The crack system is decisive in the development of the stalactites in the Harmancik Cave that extends by making curves; and sharp elbow turns.
Research History: It was researched by the Geological Studies Department of MTA General Directorate; and published in 2002.
Findings: There are no noticeable living organism colonies except for a few bats seen near the entrance.
