Destruction Details: Illicit diggings were destructing the cave [Dinçer 2010:6-8]. Even though it was declared as a protected area in 2007 the cave is still the most damaged site in the region [Dinçer 2010:12]. The cave is revisited in 2010 for a survey carried out by M. Şahin and team. During the survey it was observed that the illicit exploration holes have increased in number and depth. Şahinkaya Cave is so far the only known site where human made tools as well as fauna remains in Southern Marmara are unearthed. However archaeological embankments have been completely destructed by treasure hunters since its discovery 2 years ago [Şahin et al. 2011:103].
