Köroğlu Kalesi
Type:
Fortress
Altitude:
m
Region:
Eastern Anatolia
Province:
Kars
District:
Sarikamis
Village:
Köroglu
Investigation Method:
Survey
Period:
Middle Iron Age

It was built on a natural hill in the Köroglu Village, 30 km northeast of the Sarikamis District in Kars. It bears same characteristics with the Zivin and Micingirt Fortresses with a square plan, but it is smaller than both. It was built at a location dominating the surrounding area. With a very suitable topography for defense, the bedrock was enclosed by a ditch for reinforcing the defence. The courses of stones right above the bedrock which constitute the foundation of the fortress were built using the dry wall technique. The superstructure of the wall were made using cut stone technique with mortar reinforcement. It appears that the superstructure of the walls was modified during the Middle Age. Although there is no find indicating that the fortress had been inhabited during the Ancient Period, the foundation stones and the the stone walls on the skirts of the fortress suggest that it was also built during the Urartu Period similar to the Zivin and Micingirt Fortresses.
