The rock grave lying immediately below the Kizilkule Fortress to the west of Siçanli (Kizilkule) Village, 31 km southwest of Igdir can be accessed through a stepped entrance. The gate has a height of 1.2. m and a width of 0.75 m. The rock grave consists of a single rectangular room. The wall pierced by the door is narrow while the northwestern wall is wider, measuring 2.3 m. There are 30 cm wide and 50 cm high niches on this and southwestern walls, but they have been destroyed during illicit diggings. Since the floor of the rock grave was filled with soil, this section was not thoroughly investigated, only the presence of a bench at the bottom of the northwestern wall was identified with unknown dimensions due to deposit of soil. The most interesting feature of the Kizilkule Rock Grave is an area of 26 squaremeters, which was described as a sacred place, carved into the bedrock to the west of the entrance. Although the floor was leveled, a large portion of this section is covered with soil at present. It seems that the cutting operation was interrupted at 70 cm due to a potential harm to the rock grave and the bedrock was carved again further to the west. The sacred areas next to the rock grave represent a common characteristics of the Iron Age. |
