The settlement referred as Chrysopolis by Strabo (XII, 4, 2) was identified in Uskudar during the archaeological salvage excavations performed for the construction of the Marmaray Uskudar subway station which was initiated in 2004. Some 7th-4th centuries BC sherds were found in addition to the central acroterium of a stele in Ionic style and fragment of a fronton dating to the 5th century BC during the excavations conducted next to the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III in front of Küçük Hamam in the area between the Hakimiyeti Milliye Avenue and the Semsi Pasa Library. It is believed that the high hill known as Sultantepe, overlooking Bosphorus, was an ancient acropolis, and the slopes behind were the burial place of that period, which are also supported by the finds dating to the 7th and 6th centuries BC on the skirts of the presumed acropolis. The amphorae among the finds look similar to those found at Klazomenai and dated to 650-620 BC.
