The entrance of a domed grave was exposed during the soil removal by villagers in the Karakoç Village, 5 km north of Kirklareli, and a four-day excavation was performed by N. Firatli of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums. The tumulus near Karakoç Village has a height of 5 m, and a diameter of 30 m along with the grave and the pied earth. There is a round grave chamber with a diameter of 2.95 m behind the dromos, which is 1.45 m in length and 0.88 m in width. The burial and the burial gifts were left on the ground and covered with a thick layer of sand. The skull faces east. Among the finds are two terra cotta oil-lamps, three similar phiale mesomphalos made of grey clay imitating silver, a flask made of grey clay with double handles, a single handle pot made of grey clay, and a terracotta vase in red and a bronze bowl, a bronze oinochoe, a bronze situla and remains of completely oxidized iron weaponry. The architecture and finds of the grave were dated to the 4th century BC. |
