Location: Kökten reports that this site was at the confluence of the Murat and Karasu Streams; 44 km; as the crow flies; northwest of Elazig. It was on the first terrace of the Murat Stream before it was flooded by the Keban Dam Lake. The name Kökten chose to give this site; Eskinisefine (Eskinisefini); refers to a region that lies 12 km northeast of this area and the confluence of the Murat and Bedrettin (Tagar) streams. Eskinisefine is another area submerged by the Keban Dam Lake. It is more likely that this is the real location of the site. Although Kökten has referred to this site under many different names we have chosen to use the name he used on his maps.
Geography and Environment: Kökten reports that these finds were found in the Lower Palaeolithic deposits on the first terrace of the Murat Stream formed in the Tertiary Period. The southern part of this region is mountainous.
History:
Research and Excavation: The site was discovered in 1969 by Kökten while surveying the region expected to be flooded by the Keban Dam Lake.
Stratigraphy:
Small Finds: The research yielded flake tools with roughly worked edges and pebble tools. Along with the tools from Aktas; these are among the earliest finds from Anatolia. Kökten believes that if the surveys conducted were more intensive; a higher number of tools and possibly some fossilized Palaeolithic bones could be found. He assigns the finds to the Early Lower Palaeolithic. Yalçinkaya; on the other hand; views this with skepticism and finds these dates too early. We believe that the site and the pebble tools cannot be evaluated without excavation of the nearby caves.
