It is located at Göztepe in the Külahli/Gülpinar Village of the Ayvacik District in Çanakkale. It is suggested that it was originally an Aeolian city [Cramer 1971:116]. It is thought that it was one of the Milesian colonies founded during the 8th -7th century BC. Among the finds, where majority is dated to the 5th to 4th century BC, are ceramics from the 8th-7th century, providing the foundation date of the city. It was an independent city until it formed a union with Alexandria Troas in 427 BC. The bronze coins of Hamaksitos with Apollo depictions on the obverse and lyre depiction on the reverse are dated about 400-350 BC [Göktürk 1995:80-81]. |
