It was built on a rocky hill overlooking the plain in the Dogubayazit District of Agri. It is surrounded by a defence wall in cyclopean or semi-cyclopean technique. The masonry of these defence walls is different than the ones seen in the Eastern Anatolia in appearance. The plain grounds enclosing the fortress were occupied as necropolises. Initial evaluations showed that this necropolis area contained two types of graves: kurgans with low heaped mounds and portal dolmens. Severely damaged, the necropolis area has about 400 to 500 graves. Depending on the information obtained from the illicitly dug graves, it seems that the small low mounds were heaped over single-person graves. The material found at the fortress and the necropolises belong to a variety of periods ranging from The Middle Bronze Age to the Iron Age. |
