Geography and Environment: The cave was discovered by Enver Yasar Bostanci; who reports that it is 84 m wide and 24 m deep. The height of the cave above the reportedly thick depositional fill is 26 m [Bostanci 1975:fig.II; Bostanci 1980:fig.16].
History:
Research and Excavation: Excavations at this site began in 1971 under Bostanci's direction. In the 2 m thick deposit that was excavated; bedrock was not reached. Bostanci reports that he stopped the excavation because of financial restrictions and because the Bronze Age deposits were exteremely thick. Palaeolithic material was found only in one corner of the cave. The stratigraphy and the overlying Bronze Age material have not been published.
Stratigraphy:
Small Finds: Bostanci mentions that he found examples of Upper Palaeolithic blade technology. Also on Terrace "1" near the entrance of the cave he reports finding a large; 18.4 cm long Abbevillien biface [Bostanci 1975b:317-320][Bostanci 1975b:fig.4-7]. Bostanci proposes that this biface could have been used by Lower Palaeolithic habitants of the cave although the relationship between this biface and the cave is not clear.
