Location: The mound is near the town of Derik, west of Mardin.
Geography and Environment:
History:
Research and Excavation: In 1981, Mardin Museum conducted salvage excavations at the site. In 2005, Mardin Museum incited Asli Erim Özdogan from Istanbul University to lead another salvage excavation at the site and those salvage excavations were carried out until 2007 [http://cat.une.edu.au/page/kerkusti; 16.11.2019, 17:01].
Stratigraphy: The site was occupied in the Chalcolithic (Halaf and Ubaid), 2nd and 1st millennia BC, and during the Roman and Medieval periods [http://cat.une.edu.au/page/kerkusti; 16.11.2009, 17:01].
Small Finds: Architecture: In 2005, excavation concentrated on the Late Halaf deposits, which were sealed under a thick mud brick fill. The Halaf layer did not produce any definite tholoi but ovens were found, and large quantities of pottery, 70% of which was painted. In 2006, below the upper level are the Halaf remains. The deposits suggest several phases, from late proto-Halaf through middle Halaf. In one trench an oven/kiln was found along with quantities of pottery, suggesting the area may have been used for pottery production [http://cat.une.edu.au/page/kerkusti; 16.11.2009, 17:01]. Pottery: In 2005, the painting is fine and includes human figures. A few sherds of Samarra, Early Halaf and Middle Halaf types were found at the site, although a red, homogeneous soil was found under the Late Halaf layer [http://cat.une.edu.au/page/kerkusti; 16.11.2009, 17:01]. Human bones: Under the floor of one structure were found a number of burials of infants and young people. All appear to be secondary burials [http://cat.une.edu.au/page/kerkusti; 16.11.2009, 17:01].
