The ancient harbour at Yenikapı, on the Sea of Marmara, was found during work on the massive Marmaray Project to build an underwater tunnel linking the European and Asian parts of Istanbul. At 1.60 m below the excavated ships was found an architectural layer of the middle Neolithic/Chalcolithic period with pottery and finds, including an axe. This suggests the coastline here has moved a number of times [Current Archaeology in Turkey; 16.11.2009, 14:16]. |
