It is close to the Meander River at the bank of the Karakuyu Lake within the borders of the Eldere Village (former name Pinarbasi); 15 km east of the Dinar District; southwest of the Afyonkarahisar Province. The reeds growing at the Lake of Karakuyu probably were inspiration for the legend of Marsyas. According to the legend; Athena invented the first reed instrument (aulos) here; which was also reflected in the name of the settlement. There is a small Roman castle which is not known when it was built. Although there is no material evidence that indicates the period before the reign of Severan Dynasty, it is believed that the castle could have been built during the reign of Hadrian. There was a task unit called Vexillatio Aulutrenesis in the castle. Probably, Aulutrene Castle was built for the security of the roads extending during the valley and used as an accommodation place for the soldiers who passed by these roads [Christol - Drew Bear 1995: 57-65; Thonemann 2011:132]. Aulutrene is included within the territorium of Apameia Kibotos. It was situated on the main road; and occupied as a camp site by the military units from time to time because of rich water resources. Manlius Vulso camped here during his campaign against the Galatians in 189 B.C. During the period of Septimius Severus; it was turned into a military station by the legions of II Claduia and I Italica following the Parthian War. The watchhouse was patrolling the provincial Galatia-Asia borderline between Apameia Kibotos and Apollonia Mordiaion (see Apameia Kibotos and Apollonia Mordiaion). Many military inscriptions identified at Eldere during the survey conducted by M. Ballance in 1994 confirm the presence of a military watchhouse. The Selçuk Caravanserai in the village was probably erected on the foundations of this watchhouse.
