The ancient city of Amnistos; presumably located 12 km north-northwest of the Marmaris District of the Mugla Province; and known to have been a demos of Rhodes; was under the administration of the ancient city of Kamiros. The remains found at Sögütkoy during the survey conducted in 1954 by Bean and Cook consist of a fortress and a tower on the promontory; and a pier wall on the shore of the lower gulf in isodomic technique. Both cut stones and polygonal technique were employed during the construction of the fortress. The walls are embossed; and pierced by a corbelling vaulted gate; which is 1.6 m wide and ca. 3 m high; to the north. At the tophill; there is s building with a 0.5 m thick wall. The tower rises to the west; and it has been heavily destructed due to removal of blocks in recent years. kalınlığında duvarlara sahip bir yapı yer alır. Kule ise batıdadır ve yakın zamanda bloklarının alınması yüzünden büyük ölçüde harap olmuştur. A blac glazed Attican saltcellar was dated to the last quarter of the 5th century B.C. or the first quarter of the 4th century. A 800 m wide valley extends for up to 3 km inside the land from the sea. Inside the valley; there is an active stream; and a terrace wall; which is approximately 1.5 km far from the shore and 60 m long. The wall has bee preserved up to a height of 1 m [Bean-Cook 1957:61]. Although it is suggested that the ancient city of Amnistos is located here based on a grave inscription of a citizen of Amnistos; which was found on the shore of a small bay called Içme; 1.6 km far from Sögüt; no precise decision can be made [Bean 1976:848]. Also found are two grave altarsa and potherds from the Hellenistic Period [Bean-Cook 1957:62].
