The surveys conducted by Ruggieri in 1997 and 1998 at Alakisla around the ancient city of Keramos within the borders of the Oren Village of the Milas District of the Mugla Province yielded the remains of a Karian fortress on a hill to the north; and its plan was outlined [Ruggieri 1999:225]. Also; potsherds from the 4th century were recovered inside the fortress. The presence of a Carian settlement was ascertained. The L-shaped massive Carian blocks to the southeast of the city continue along the seaside; and advance 3 m into the sea. The walls on the shore were renovated during the Byzantine Period. It is believed that the Byzantine port had also been used during the period of the Carian settlement. Based on these finds; it seems that there was a substantially large Carian settlement in the area where the Byzantine city is located at [Ruggieri 2000:381-382]. The fragment of an inscription; which was re-used on the eastern wall of the main church in the city; is from the Hellenistic Period. The broken inscription; of which only six lines are visible; is related with burial. It is part of another inscription; which was recovered during the previous surveys. [Ruggieri 2000:382]. The researcher also mentions a bath with unknown date [Ruggieri 2000:383-384].
