It rests on a steep rock rising on the bank of of the Euphrates, 500 m north of the Horis Village [Özdogan 1977:85]. The fort was included in the Lower Euphrates Project for documentation, salvage and preservation of the material assets and cultural heritage that will be flooded by the Atatürk and Karakaya Dam Reservoirs within the GAP area. The region was first surveyed in 1975 by a team of the Ankara University under the direction of Ü. Serdaroglu. Same year a second team of the Istanbul University conducted a more comprehensive survey in the region under the direction of M. Özdogan. Standing on a rocky hill on the eastern bank of the Euphrates, the fortress yielded very limited number of Iron Age material during the short-term excavations by B. Ögün of the Ankara University. The surface finds included remains from the Early Bronze Age, Iron Age, Classical Period and Post-Classical Period [Özdogan 1977:85]. At present, the Fort of Horis has been already flooded by the Atatürk Dam reservoir. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
