The region was first surveyed by a team of the University of Ankara under the direction of U. Serdaroglu in 1975. Within the same year, a second team from the University of Istanbul under the direction of M. Ozdogan conducted a more comprehensive survey in the region. The lakes of the Atatürk and Karakaya Dams had an impact on some villages of Adiyaman, Elazig, Malatya and Sanliurfa in general and the District of Samsat in particular. The excavations conducted by S. Alp of the University of Ankara yielded that the flat settlement on the eastern bank of the Euphrates is from the Iron Age dating to 1000 BC.
