The caves are in Duyduk (Harabebezikan) Village in Birecik district; Sanliurfa province. They are aligned side by side and located northeast of the Kulabtar rock shelters and at a slightly higher altitude from the stream [Taskiran-Kartal 2001:520]. The caves are neither very large nor deep and are used as animal pens today. This is one of the few find places in the region that may yield finds belonging to the Palaeolithic Period in the fill of the caves. Materials were encountered on the terraces overlooking the stream [Taskiran-Kartal 2001:520]. This site was discovered in 1999 by a team leaded by H. Taskiran during the project of "The Palaeolithic Survey in the Carchemish Dam Reservoir Region" coordinated by METU TAÇDAM (Center for Research and Assessment of the Historic Environment). It has the characteristics of the Lower; Middle and Upper Palaeolithic Periods [Taskiran-Kartal 2001:520]. A very typical Mousterian point was found. The two blades collected have the characteristics of the Upper Palaeolithic [Taskiran-Kartal 2001:520]. Code W49/29. |
