Dizmirtasi Mevkii is in the province of Gaziantep; Karkamis district; Yukari Bayindir Village. No materials were found in the area along Çukurkoyak Stream; about 1250 m southwest of Kini Mahallesi where the two dry river beds conjoin. But the field that lies on the southern part of the stream is a Palaeolithic habitation site and workshop. This field belongs to Ismet Algöz from Günalti (Büyüktilmiyan) Village and is in the area locally called Dizmirtasi. This site was discovered in 2000 by a team under H. Taskiran during the project of "The Palaeolithic Survey in the Carchemish Dam Reservoir Region" coordinated by METU TAÇDAM (Center for Research and Assessment of the Historic Environment). The materials are scattered over a 60x300 m area. Some of the tools were found broken due to the agricultural activities carried on the field. Most of the finds are biface tools. This site appears to be a biface tool workshop. According to 74 biface tools; 5 pickaxes and 2 chopping tools found on the site; Dizmirtasi Mevkii can be dated to the Lower Palaeolithic [Taskiran 2002:424]. Code W48/27. |
