Location: This site lies in Velican Quarter of Karsli Village; 12 km south of the city of Adana.
Geography and Environment: The site was lying on the western shore of the Seyhan River; at the beginning of the narrow valley created by this river before the construction of the dam. It is nearby the dam reservoir today. With the 10 m thick rock outcrop it lies on; the total height of the mound is 15-17 m. Although claimed to be the earliest settlement in the Province of Adana doubts remain.
History:
Research and Excavation: The site was first surveyed by Ali Riza Bey of the American Research Team. The collected material is now at the Adana Museum. The site was then visited in 1951 by M.V. Seton-Williams during his 1951 Cilician Survey.
Stratigraphy: Based on the ceramics collected on the mound by Seton-Williams one can say that the mound was settled continuously from the Chalcolithic to the Middle Ages; with a possible earlier Neolithic component.
Small Finds: Pottery: It cannot be ascertained whether some of the burnished ware is Neolithic. The density of this ware in comparison with others has not been given. Neither photos nor publications of this ware have been provided in the publication. The burnished ware resembles Mersin Yumuktepe XXVI-XXIV ceramics.
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: The Neolithic component of this site must be viewed with reservation. Seton-Williams places the site of Velican among the regional Neolithic sites [Seton-Williams 1954:128]. The ware which shows close affinity with Yumuktepe ceramics has been placed in phase 6 in ASPRO (Uncalibrated dates for this phase are 7;600-7;000 BP) [Hours et al. 1994:357].
