Location: The site lies southwest of Sanliurfa; south of Birecik District; approximately 700 m north-northeast of Ziyaret Village; very close to Turkey-Syria border; approximately 3.5-4 km north-northeast of Karkamis Höyügü. |
Geography and Environment: The 610x200 m mound; located at the east side of Euphrates on rocks just beside the river; covers an area of 12.2 hectares. It is ovoid; flat; and one of the important sites around the region due to its size. 5 m thick deposit is observed at the western section. Settlers probably used the river as a water source. Building remains southeast of the site are observed to be eroded away. |
History: |
Research and Excavation: The site was discovered by L. Wooley; and named as Tell Ziguret (probably Ziyaret Village). A systematic surface collection; in which the mound was researched in three divisions; was conducted by G. Algaze as a part of the Tigris-Euphrates Archaeological Reconnaissance Survey Project in 1989. |
Stratigraphy: The analysis of surface finds suggest more than one layer at the site. Late Chalcolithic Age; EBA 3 / MBA 1; and Medieval Age settlements are thought to be existent. |
Small Finds: Pottery: Jar pieces with everted rims; bowl pieces with inverted hammer-head rims belonging to the Late Chalcolithic Age and bevelled rim bowls of Uruk Period were recovered from the western section of the mound. Similar vessels were found in Hacinebi close by. Sherds of rim-slipped bowls and bevelled rim bowls were collected from the surface of the cone. |

Interpretation and Dating: Uruk Period finds of Tiladir Tepe are thought to be earlier than those from Uruk Period settlements of Sadi Tepe; Komeçli; and Kum Ocagi. Salvage excavations must be conducted soon; because the mound and its surroundings will be inundated by Karkamis Dam. |
