| It lies east of Hacioglu (Hacioglan) Village; 3 km east of the Sinop-Erfelek motorway; about 10 km south of Sinop Province. It measures 75-100x50 m in dimension and 15 m in height. It was discovered by A. Erzen in 1953; and investigated by C.A. Burney in 1955; by M.A. Isin in 1987; by S. Dönmez in 1997 followed by a team under O.P. Doonan in 1998-99. It was dated to the EBA by A. Erzen while to the Late Chalcolithic Age by C.A. Burney. M. A. Isin dated the pottery recovered from Maltepe to the EBA I whereas S. Dönmez stated that there are wares dating from the Late Chalcolithic Age. Also found are flint tools and limestone bracelets. According to Doonan et al; a blade industry is predominant at Maltepe; and pottery recovered from the surface can be dated to the Chalcolithic Age. However; since similar limestone bracelets were also available during the Neolithic Age; it is considered that there are layers dating to the earlier periods. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism. |
