Location: This lies southeast of the city of Eskisehir and west of the Eskisehir-Seyitgazi highway. It is on the eastern flanks of Mount Tahtalibaba; on the plateau north of the village of Sarayören (Alponos/Alpoguz); about 25 km from Eskisehir. |
Geography and Environment: There are flintstone quarries in the plateau to the north of Alponos; close to the Kocabogaz Stream. The biface handaxe mentioned below was found northwest of the village on the flanks of 1;331 m high Mount Tahtalibaba. |
History: |
Research and Excavation: The number of chipped stone tools; other flakes and debitage products found in Kökten and Chaput's initial survey of the plateau is very low. Kökten resurveyed the area in 1952. |
Stratigraphy: |
Small Finds: Chaput found a small biface handaxe; 7.8 cm long and 3 cm wide [Chaput 1941:fig.V]. It is suggested that its production technique resembles the European Levalloisien VI handaxe industry. Tomsky assigns this handaxe to the Upper Acheuléen [Tomsky 1982:192-193]. Kökten's 1952 surface survey unfortunately yielded no similar handaxes. |
