Location: It lies 4.3 km northeast of Kandilli Village; 5 km west of Inönü; south-southeast of the Bilecik Province.
Geography and Environment: It is located on the western part of the Eskisehir Plain; south of Sarisu; a small branch of the Porsuk River. It is an oval hill; 7.5 m high above the plain level and 400 m long in the north-south direction. Northern part looks higher while southern part has a terrace. It was introduced as Kandilli; being named after the nearest village. However; T. Efe reports that it is locally known as Bahçehisar. It is one of the biggest mounds in the region.
History:
Research and Excavation: It was introduced by D.H. French under the name of Kandilli [French 1969:fig.35; no.322]; however a detailed survey could have been carried out only in 1990 by T. Efe [Efe 1992:56].
Stratigraphy: Surface finds yielded the presence of settlements dating to EBA II and III; beginning of the second millennium BC; the Classical and Byzantine Periods. T. Efe reports that EBA materials are denser in the eastern part of the mound compared to the northern part.
Small Finds: Pottery: Samples of red washed ware and fine red washed ware were recovered; dating to EBA III of the Eskisehir region and found at levels of Demircihöyük settlement. The former is usually handmade; small grit tempered fine pasted; washed in reddish brown and burnished while the latter is usually produced by slow-turning wheel. Its fine paste is tempered with fine sand and mica; and its surface color is same as the former group. The wash is thinner; and burnished elaborately. Forms of bowls and plates; overlapping ring handled jugs and etc. are common as well as reserved slip decorated and incision decorated wares [Efe 1994:fig.23] Clay: Two small fragments of a terracotta idol were recovered; one with a head and the other with a decorated body only. Fragments of animal figurines were collected. Two spindle-whorls recovered bear decorations. Ground Stone: Fragment of a dark gray burnished stone axe was collected from the surface.
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: Ware groups dated to the end of EBA III among the materials recovered from Kandilli/Bahçehisar Mound are comparable with the transition wares of Central Anatolia. They are earlier than MBA ware of Demircihöyük; therefore the mound is claimed to be a significant one. EBA IIIb wares of Bahçehisar are somewhat associated with Troy IV; Beycesultan VI-VII; Polatli XII-XI and Büyükkale 8d-9 levels.
