Geçit Höyük is located at the Sögütlü Quarter of Elbistan district, Kahramanmaras Province. Sögütlü Creek passes through the south of the settlement. The mound is located at a 1200 m altitude and covers an area of approximately 2223 square meters. The mound is dated to the Late Chalcolithic Period, Early and the Middle Bronze Ages, the Early Trans-caucasian Period and the Hittite Periods [Dumankaya et. al. 2018: 474]. The first pottery assembladge from Geçit Höyük consists of the dark faced Early Trans-caucasian / Karaz pottery with light-brown or brown interiors. The second group is the cream coated plain simple ware with exterior-thickened rims shallow grooves. Another ware documented at Geçitli Höyük is the so called "Elazig-Malatya Painted Ware" or Imperial Period Hittite Pottery painted with band motifs. This ware is common in Hittite centers and the Hittite layers from Elazig-Malatya region. Similar pottery had been found within the region at Elbistan-Karahöyük, Yassihöyük and Tudegin Höyük. O. Dumankaya and his team applied for the registration of the mound as an archaeological site and the process is still going on [Dumankaya et. al. 2018: 474-5]. |
