Ellesen (Gülü) Höyük is located at the Nevruzlu Quarter of Dulkadiroglu district, Kahramanmaras Province. The mound is located at a 537 m altitude and covers an area of approximately 18893 square meters [Dumankaya et. al. 2018: 302]. The mound is dated to the Early-Middle Bronze Age and the Hittite Period [Dumankaya et. al. 2018: 302]. Although there is a variety of forms found at Ellesen (Gülü) Höyük where pottery finds are abundant, the pottery from the mound is classified under two main groups: the gray-black ware and the red-pinkish ware. The dark gray ware probably dates to the Hittite Period and besides a few notched adorned ones, they are mostly non-burnished. This intensely grit- tempered group mostly consists of externally thickened flaring rims, vertical handle sherds with linear decorations and possible sieve sherds with 1 cm wide holes. This ware is dated to the Assyrian Colony Period or the Early Hittite Period as they are compared to similar examples within the region found at Tudegin Çebikçil and Karacaören Höyük. The second group consisting of the Early Bronze-Middle Bronze Age dark red-cream coated ware has a better texture and finely tempered. Also, there are a few examples of pedestal based pottery forms at Ellesen (Gülü) Höyük [Dumankaya et. al. 2018: 302]. |
