Location: This site lies east of the Istanbul city center (Eminönü); on the Asian side; in Içerenköy; an area that used to be a summer resort place and has since become a district of Istanbul.
Geography and Environment: The exact location of this site; reported to be 2 m beneath surface level; is not known. It is believed to be somewhere between Içerenköy and Sahrayi Cedit. The site was found by S. A. Kansu during his research in this area. The site has since been completely destroyed by modern development.
History:
Research and Excavation: At the turn of the century; A.D Mordtmann found several antigorite bifaces (possibly handaxes) in the Erenköy and Içerenköy Region. The site was found during the construction of a palace. It is believed to be a temporary habitation area.
Stratigraphy:
Small Finds: Although these finds have been worn; the typological characteristics indicate that the tools are pre-Acheuléen and date to the Lower Palaeolithic. The finds have special importance because they are probably some of the earliest Anatolian tools [Bittel 1934:125; Kansu 1963b:663]. Because of its similarity to the European finds; Esin speculates that this open-air site in Içerenköy probably dates to the end of the Mindel Ice Ages [Esin 1992:61]. Bittel informs us that these tools are stored in Robert College in Arnavutköy. Because no photos or drawings of these artifacts have been published the assigned dates should be viewed with scepticism.
