1968 m
Region:
Eastern Anatolia
Province:
Erzurum

Olur
Village:
Begendik
Investigation Method:
Survey
Period:

It is located in the southern skirts of Yukari Begendik Kalesi, 1.5 km northwest of Begendik Quarter in Olur District of Erzurum Province. It was discovered during the survey conducted by N. Ceylan in 2013. It is smaller than Yukari Begendik Kalesi. Both of these fortresses were built at the same period. Architectural remains were encountered in the southern and western skirts of the fortress. The fortress was built in stepback technique. The city walls were built in cyclopean masonry. The entrance is located to the southwest. It is possible that this fortress was built in order to protect Yukari Begendik Kalesi. Potsherds and architectural remains indicate that it is dated to EBA. It is also possible that it was occupied during IA and Middle Age [Ceylan et al. 2015:78].
