Region:
Central Anatolia

Merkez
Village:
Hashöyük
Investigation Method:
Excavation

EBA III

Location: It is near the village it was named after; 35 km east of the Kirsehir Province.
Geography and Environment: It is reported to measure 8-10 m in height and 400x300 m in dimensions as an oval hill. It has not been damaged much.
History:
Research and Excavation: It was introduced in 1929 by von der Osten; and excavated in 1931 under L. Delaporte for one season only. A small sounding was carried out in 1943 by H. Çambel in the name of the Turkish Historical Society to verify the outcomes of first excavation. The result of Delaporte's excavation was partly published; however almost no information was provided about the excavation of H. Çambel. The finds of the former excavation are preserved at the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations whereas the finds of the latter at the Laboratory of Prehistoric Department; Faculty of Literature; University of Istanbul. The excavated area is reported to be 80x5-10 m in total. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Stratigraphy: Not much was obtained about the stratification of Hashöyük. However; presence of three layers was reported. The lowest layer belongs to the Late Chalcolithic Age; and the middle layer is dated to the end of the fourth millennium BC with at least four building levels to the EBA and finally the upper layer yielding the pottery industry of the second and first millennia BC to the Hittite and Phrygian Periods.
Small Finds: Pottery: The best information about the pottery industry dated from the EBA was published by W. Orthmann [Orthmann 1963:22]. Starting from the second building level of EBA; cups identical to the transition settlements of Kültepe and Alisar in form were found while the upper levels housed intact cups and sherds of the EBA-MBA intermediate period. The Cappodocian ware was recovered from the both lower and upper levels as well. The painting decorated sherds identical to the decorated group of ware known from the settlement of Çiçekdagi start from the upper level of the first layer and continue until the last building level of EBA. Likewise; sherds of the white rhomb painted on reddish brown or red background were observed from the lowest level of EBA. Some of them are handmade; others wheel-made. This type of painted ware is associated with the painted ware on the southern parts of Central Anatolia. Metal: A dagger claimed to be found at Hashöyük is included in the No.2 of the simple types of daggers of D. Stronach [Stronach 1957:92].
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: Altough Hashöyük is a significant settlement for the Central Anatolia; the excavation lasted very short and was not published in detail. The building layers of EBA probably date to the end of EBA III.
