Location: This site lies southeast of the city of Kütahya; 4 km north of the town of Altintas and 1.4 km west of the village of Alibey Köy.
Geography and Environment: It is reported that the mound is approximately 4.5 m high and that the base has an 83 m diameter [Efe 1994:576]. The site is west of the Aksaz Swamp and north of the village of Çetme.
History:
Research and Excavation: The site was discovered by T. Efe during his surface survey in the Kütahya; Bilecik and Eskisehir Provinces in 1992. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Stratigraphy: The site of Hacihamza is mainly Early Bronze Age. Efe notes that he collected Early Bronze Age I and II sherds from the surface of the mound.
Small Finds: Pottery: One of the sherds collected from the surface of the mound during the survey was assigned to the Neolithic. It is a buff colored deep bowl fragment with red painted decoration. Both sides of the sherd have a painted band by the rim. The shape of the vessel cannot be determined because only one rim sherd was found. On the outer surface of the sherd there are two thin lines have been placed between the two thick bands [Efe 1995b:107; fig 2/14].
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: Ceramics; similar in terms of ware and decoration to the sherd from Hacihamza; were found at the site of Findik Kayabasi. No undecorated Neolithic sherds were collected from the site of Hacihamza. The Neolithic layer may have been completely covered by alluvial deposits. Until further information is unearthed; the Late Neolithic assignment of the earlier layer of the site should be viewed with skepticism. Efe believes that there are more Neolithic settlements in the region but that they have not be found due to limited surveys [Efe 1995b:106].
