Location: This habitation site lies at the meeting point of the provinces of Erzincan; Tunceli; Malatya and Elazig; west of the Euphrates; northeast of the city of Malatya and northwest of the city of Elazig. It is approximately 1;250 m northeast of the village of Ögrendik; formerly called Gerani; which lies north of Agin and between Pulköy and Bahadirlar. So far it has not been possible to determine which province the site is located in. Although the area is locally known as Agtasi; named after Agtasi Tepe; Kökten altered it slightly to Aktas.
Geography and Environment: Processes of erosion and deposition on this elevated terrain have created undulating hills and high plateaus. The surroundings of the site consist of Miocene sediment and limestone.
History:
Research and Excavation: The site of Aktas was found during Kiliç Kökten's 1971 investigation of the areas expected to be flooded by the Keban Dam Lake. It has since disappeared under water.
Stratigraphy:
Small Finds: In the Miocene deposits Kökten found oyster and seaweed fossils and their imprints; as well as pebble tools and large notched flakes made from flint nodules. The nature of the deposits and the associated fossils led the researcher to believe that the tools belong to an earlier period than they actually do [Kökten 1974:3; fig.5/2 and fig.25]. Based on finds from other sites such as Beypazari-Çeçtepe; Eskini Sefine and Aktas; Yalçinkaya has suggested that an early Palaeolithic Anatolian culture existed [Yalçinkaya 1985:429]. This habitation/activity area has been assigned to the Lower Palaeolithic. The pebble tools make this site one of the earliest Anatolian pebble industries.
