Although surveys conducted by J.M. Cook suggested that the city should have been located at the Mount Balli around Ilion, its location is still uncertain [Cook 1973:139]. Two cultural layers were identified during the excavations conducted in 1882 by Schliemann, where samples of Archaic pottery were uncovered in the first cultural layer, and sherds dating to the 4th century BC and the Hellenistic Period in the second layer. Also found are city walls dating to the Hellenistic Period of the city, which, in fact, functioned like the most important fortress lying to the southeast of Ilion [Akarca 1978:46-47]. |
