The excavation conducted by Th. Makridi in 1926 on behalf of the Board of Education at Demirkapi Mevkii near Çankirikapi yielded sherds dating to the Phrygian Period underlying the Byzantine and Roman layers. Furthermore, R.O. Arik conducted an excavation in the mound of Çankirikapi in 1937, and found plenty of dark-grey painted sherds, which appears belonging to the Phrygian culture. |
