It rests on a natural rock, extending 100 m in the east-west direction on the southern border of the Solhan District in Bingöl. The architectural remains on the Cankurtaran Hill have been heavily destroyed. The mound was presumably enclosed by stone walls during the Middle Iron Age. On the western end, there is a conic elevation with a base about 30 m in diameter, which has been flattened at present. The wall remains on the eastern skirts were erected with large stones. The mound rises from east to west through terraces. The surface ceramics collected from the Cankurtaran Hill are composed of a homogenous set, mainly consisting of fine grit tempered ware of mica and tile paste, slipped in paste-color, and large storage vessels with thick walls and burnished outer surface. Sherds of carinated pithoi mainly with simple mouths, and everted rims, mostly observed in the Urartian fortresses, are noteworthy. It appears that the Cankurtaran Hill always maintained its dependence to the local tradition of the Early Iron Age. |
