Başköy Kalesi
Type:
Fortress
Altitude:
m
Region:
Eastern Anatolia
Province:
Erzurum
District:
Hinis
Village:
Basköy
Investigation Method:
Survey
Period:
Middle Iron Age

It was founded on the highest hill (2050 m) of the region, rising to the immediate northwest of Basköy, 15 km northwest of the Hinis District in Erzurum. Measuring 105x45 m in dimensions, it commands the watercourses and transportation roads. Due to its height, presumably it was used during attacks as it is difficult to access. The foundation of the defensive walls and interior structures are clearly visible at present. Regular rows of stones are observed on the northern end, strecthing 15 m long, and 1.5 m wide, and on the western end, strecthing 3.5 m long and again 1.5 m wide. Series of stones, 1.5 m wide and 10 m long, erected using the corbelling technique are seen on the southwestern end. In the inner section to the west lie circular stone foundations, which are 50 cm wide. It has been heavily destroyed due to intense illicit diggings. Based on the ceramic data and construction technique of the fortress, it seems that it had been re-occupied during the Middle Age after being constructed in the Iron Age.
