Early Iron Age Middle Iron Age

It lies north of the Borluk Stream, as a southern neighbour of the Azat Village in the Merkez District, east of the road to Kagizman, 8-9 km south of Kars. It was discovered by K. Kökten in 1944, and a small excavation was conducted in 1952. The stratification was partly revealed by the help of a trench of 5x8 m. The virgin soil was not reached although it was explored down to a depth of 4.5 m. Even tough it was reported that the trench yielded layers dating to the Chalcolithic Age, Hittite Period, Urartu Period, and Classical Age [Kökten 1944:669], there should have been no layer related with the Hittite Period as there was no Hittite expansion to the Kars area. Traces of fire are observed in the Chalcolithic layer. The wall remains of this layer do not include any traces of mudbrick or mortar, except the foundation stones. No plan or layout is available. The mound measures 80x60 m in dimensions with a height of 20 m. Sherds from the Early Bronze Age and Early Iron Age were recovered.
