Eastern Anatolia

Gürpinar

Investigation Method:

Period:
Middle Iron Age

It is situated in the Gürpinar District of Van. It was a strategically significant fortress. It commands the Van motorway running from Baskale. It has an excellent masonry in the Cyclopean style. The stones were dressed and orderly placed. No mortar was used. It is comparable with the material unearthed at Toprakkale to a great extent. The fortress has been heavily destroyed. On both sides there are deep and long channels for defense purposes. The channel to the northeast is 8 m wide with maximum depth while the channel to the southwest is narrower and more superficial, which can be explained with the soil filled up later on. Rock steps are observed at the entrance of the fortress, which is located at the most convenient spot for defence purposes. Also found are two cisterns.
