It lies on the Cape Besige to the south of the ancient city of Sigeion. Information on the history of the city is very restricted. The main significance of Achilleion comes from the fact that the tumulus of Achilleus is located here as referred by Strabo. A relatively large tumulus on a slope behind the Cape Besige was considered as the tomb of Achilleus, however nothing was found during the excavation conducted by Schliemann [Göktürk 1995:69-70]. J.M. Cook mentions the presence of sherds dating from the 6th century BC to the Hellenistic Period around the city during his survey [Cook 1973:181]. It consists of two parts, lower city and acropolis, and no other information is available about the history of the city except the war against the Athenians. It seems that Achilleion was overshadowed by Athens and Sigeion after the reign of Peisistratos [Akarca 1978:23]. |
