It is located 6 km to the north of Çanakkale on the Anatolian shore of the Çanakkale Strait (the Dardanelles). Although it was one of the richest cities of the time, no significant remains survived to the present day [Sevin 2001a:62-63]. It was founded by Miletus upon the consent of Gyges, the king of Lydia; therefore it should be dating from 680 to 652. It indicates that the Western Anatolia was under the control of the Lydians during that period [Graham1992:121]. Abydos had the best of the natural ports among the cities of Troad [Gorman 2001:243]. As generally accepted, it was colonized by Miletus in 670 B.C., and the numismatists report that the coins of electrum with an eagle were minted throughout the 6th century B.C. However, the earliest silver coins of Abydos are in Persic standards, probably belonging to 480-450 BC. The finest coins of the city are from the Decylidas Period, i.e. 41-387 BC [Göktürk 1995:68-69]. |
