Selymbria (Silivri) is situated on the northern shoreline of the Marmara Sea towards the west after Rhegion and Athyra. It was probably founded over a Thracian fortress by immigrants from Megara during the mid 7th century BC [Sevin 2001a:21]. The word "Bria" is the same as "polis"in Thracian, and Selymbria means the city of Selus. It is a city referred both by Herodotus (VII, 137) and Xenophon (Anabasis, VII, 5, 15). |
