Saztepe
Type:
Fortress
Altitude:
m
Region:
Eastern Anatolia
Province:
Erzincan
District:
Merkez
Village:
Saztepe
Investigation Method:
Survey
Period:
Middle Iron Age

It is situated at an altitude of 1280 m, 2 km away from Altintepe, 8 km east of Erzincan. It was named after the reed fields (Saz Tepe/Reed Hill) around it. The eastern section was used as a necropolis area. Due to its proximity to the city center, traces of many illicit diggings are observed. Sherds dating to the Iron Age including painted ware and Middle Age are found. It was defined as the center that provided the most important ceramic finds during the survey in 2006, that were performed alongside Altintepe excavations. No other settlements was identified in the region that contained paint decorated findings at this density. But, since the paint decorated pottery tradition is not very common for Urartu culture, it is assumed this has to do with Achaemenid period potteryderived partially in Eastern Anatolia and Iran, after Urartu period, and known in archaeological literatur as "Triangle Ware" [Isikli (Karaosmanoglu et al.) 2008:505].
