It is the farmost settlement on the Karadeniz (Pontos Euksinos) shore to the south of Igneada (Thynias) Cape, north of Salmydessos (Midye/Kiyiköy) on the northern end of the Turkish Thrace. According to Strabo, Salmydessos was a deserted and stoony area without a port on the seashore, defenseless against the northern winds. It was destroyed by a local tribe called Astae to the north [Strabo, XII, 3, 3]. Xenophon also mentions that many ships wrecked off Salmydessos [VII, 5, 12] because a major part of the shoreline is shallow.
